The Sobczak family consists of
Mitch, his wife Maria, and their two sons, Simon and Paul.
Mitch Sobczak was born and
raised in Communist Poland. He lived there until 1981, at which time he
defected to Austria for four months and then onto the United States in
the same year.
Since being in America, Mitch and
his wife Maria have lived in Chicago, St. Louis, and a little town near
Jefferson City, Missouri, called Henly.
While in Henly, Mitch worked on
a 2000 acre farm. He did everything from milking cows to working on tractors,
and everything in between.
Once in Arizona, the Sobczaks'
bought a parcel of land in Sunizona near Douglas, Arizona. Eventually,
Mitch and Maria wound up in Northern Arizona, and finally are settled today
at the Canyon Trading Post just outside Williams. The Canyon Trading Post
is open seven days a week from as Mitch puts it, "dark to dark".
If you find the opportunity to
visit the Canyon Trading Post, you will find a variety of interesting artifacts
to entice your gift giving fancy. Mitch is quite a talented stone cutter
and has a large quantity of his work on display and for sale in his shop.
Mitch said he spends many weekends traveling on the Indian Reservations
trading with Indian artists. By
trading with the Indians himself he can find superior quality Indian art,
at a better price than what is available from the wholesalers.
As you stroll around the trading company
store you will find Indian rugs, souvenirs, pottery and blankets. You will
see Navajo mandalas, beautiful stone clocks, jewelry, and much, much more.
The Canyon Trading Post also provides
garage service, gasoline and a limited quantity of grocery items. In the
future, Mitch plans to open a fresh fruit stand and provide diesel fuel
for those vehicles that use it.
Mitch is very proud of his stone
cutting business. He can take a raw ugly stone and cut, grind and polish
it into a beautiful piece of art work. It is simply amazing the variety
of items he has made from stone. Each one is different and appealing in
its own way.
Mitch and Maria Sobczak
are an interesting couple with an interesting story to tell. If you are
out on Highway 64 drop by the Canyon Trading Post. I'm sure Mitch and Maria
will take the time to make you feel welcome.
